The Summit Meeting
Following the meeting, the two Prime Ministers viewed a Japanese sword presented by PM TAKAICHI to PM Wale
On 23rd July, Prime Minister Matthew Cooper Wale and his delegation, including Hon. Houenipwela, Hon. Kenilorea Jr., Hon. Fuo'o, and Hon. Ramofafia, arrived in Japan and held a Summit Meeting with Prime Minister TAKAICHI on the same day.
Prior to the Summit Meeting, the guard of honour ceremony conducted by the Japan Self-Defense Forces was held to welcome PM Wale and his delegation. During the meeting, the two leaders exchanged their views about the Indo-Pacific region and confirmed the importance of maintaining and strengthening the unity among the countries in the Pacific Island region. They also agreed to continue working closely together, including in preparation for the 11th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM11), which is scheduled to be held in Yokohama next summer.
Following the meeting, the two Prime Ministers viewed a Japanese sword presented by PM TAKAICHI to PM Wale. The meeting was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere throughout and further strengthened the positive momentum for enhancing bilateral relations between Solomon Islands and Japan.
On the day of the summit meeting, PM Wale and his delegation also attended a welcome reception co-hosted by the Honorary Consulate and the Japan Pacific Islands Association (JAPIA). In addition, from 24th to 25th July, they participated in a number of engagements, including a meeting with Mr Yohei SASAKAWA, Honorary Chairman of The Nippon Foundation and the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, a luncheon hosted by the Japan–Solomon Islands Parliamentary Friendship League, a meeting with the President of JICA Mr Akihiko TANAKA and the signing ceremony for the DPL Loan Agreement (L/A), a meeting with former PM Mr Fumio KISHIDA, a courtesy call by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr Iwao HORII, and a luncheon with Solomon Islanders diaspora residing in Japan hosted by JAPIA. At the luncheon hosted by JAPIA, one participant remarked, "This is the first time I have had the opportunity to meet our Prime Minister. It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I am delighted."
During PM Wale's visit, the streets around Kasumigaseki, where the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are located, were decorated with the national flags of Solomon Islands and Japan, creating a welcoming atmosphere throughout Japan for the new Prime Minister of Solomon Islands and his delegation.
Although Solomon Islands and Japan are geographically far apart and opportunities for face-to-face meetings are often limited, PM Wale made full use of this visit. In addition to the summit meeting, he engaged in frank and constructive exchanges at every meeting, providing a valuable opportunity for both countries to deepen their mutual understanding and further strengthen their partnership.
