Results Presentation Ceremony for CBDC Pilot Project by Soramitsu and the Central Bank of Solomon Islands

On 17th June, a ceremony was held to present the results of a pilot project on a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC : known as Bokolo Cash), implemented by Soramitsu Co., Ltd. (“Soramitsu”) and the Central Bank of Solomon Islands (CBSI). The ceremony was attended by Ambassador HIGUCHI; CBSI Governor, Dr Luke Forau; CEO of Soramitsu, Dr Makoto Takemiya; Deputy Governor of the Bank of Papua New Guinea, Jeffrey Yabom; and other officials from the Solomon Islands Government and the banking sector.
This project is being implemented under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan “Global South Future-Oriented Co-Creation Project,” and aims to promote digital payments and online remittances in Solomon Islands.
Ambassador HIGUCHI expressed his expectation that Japan’s transformative technologies will contribute to a more inclusive and digitalised future in Solomon Islands.
Dr Luke Forau, Governor of CBSI, welcomed the representatives of Soramitsu and expressed his appreciation for their cooperation, emphasising that digitalisation through CBDC is not merely a technical initiative, but a strategic transformation with a long-term vision.
