On 12th February, approximately 50 residents of the Mbokona community received Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) awareness program from Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team who had been trained by the Self-Defense Forces of Japan. (Location: Hells Point)

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) EOD teams carefully explained the possible locations, shapes, and power of UXO, as well as what to do if found, using kamishibai(picture-story shows), photos, and videos so that everyone from children to adults could easily understand. Participants occasionally looked surprised or nodded deeply, and it seemed that the programme raised their awareness of risk avoidance regarding UXOs.

In the latter half, participants observed actual UXOs that had been discovered, and by touching real UXOs of different shapes, sizes, and weights, all participants gained more knowledge about UXOs.

We hope that this training opportunity provided by the Ministry of Defense to the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) EOD teams will lead to further enhancement of UXO disposal activities in the Solomon Islands.
