On 5 August,”80th Anniversary Memorial Service was organised by the All Japan Solomon Association(AJSA) for Japanese Military Personnels, Solomon Islanders, and American and Australian Military Personnels Who Lost Their Lives in the Solomon Islands region during World War II”. The service was attended by about 60 persons, including members of the AJSA, Ambassador Higuchi, Director General of JICA Solomon Islands Office, Mr Kawasaki and its staff, Japanese residents in Solomon Islands including JICA volunteers, supporters of the collection of remains and MP Peter Kenirorea Jr. (The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs of Solomon Islands and Co-Chairman of the Solomon Islands Friends of Japan Parliamentarians) and others.
In his address of condolence, Ambassador Higuchi paid tribute to the work of the AJSA, which has made great efforts over the past 60 years to recover the Japanese war dead remains, and thanked understanding and support for such activities by Solomon Islanders and express of his hope that Solomon Islanders continue their understanding and cooperation in the future so that AJSA activities can continue.
In his address, MP Hon Peter Kenyirolea Jr said, "Memorials in the Solomon Islands, with its long history, are important not only for Japan, but also for the Solomon Islands to continue to keep the peace. It is not only a call for world peace and the promotion of friendly relations between the Solomon Islands and Japan, and the need to ensure that war never happens again and that peace remains, but it is also instructive for reconciliation within the Solomon Islands".
Other participants also stressed the importance of the Japan-Solomon Islands relationship, the mourning of the victims of war regardless of nationality, the importance of world peace and reconciliation within the Solomon Islands.
