On Dec 4, the Embassy of Japan in the Solomon Islands held a briefing session for media regarding “High School Students Summit on World Tsunami Awareness Day 2024” in Kumamoto from October 23rd to 24th. During the opening remarks, Ambassador MIWA Yoshiaki briefed the background of the summit and mentioned “In 2011, when Japan suffered extensive damage from the Great East Japan Earthquake, we received many support from many countries. Through this experience, Japan learnt the importance of international cooperation in times of disaster, as well as the importance of raising awareness for disaster prevention and management. I’m pleased that the students from Selwyn College participated in this summit in the context of the cooperation between Japan and Solomon Islands. I hope that the students will use knowledges that they learnt from this summit for disaster prevention and preparedness in Solomon Islands.”
The principal from Selwyn College expressed his appreciation for the opportunity granted them to participate in the summit and mentioned “We could gain a deeper understanding about disaster prevention and preparedness through presentations and discussions with students from other countries. We’ll put what we learnt from this summit into actions in Solomon Islands.”
The five students gave a presentation about the overview of the summit, what they learnt through discussions with students from other countries, and cultural experience in Japan. In Q&A session with media, they expressed their strong willingness to contribute to raising awareness of the importance of damages caused by Tsunami, preparation, and early-warning.
