The Signing Ceremony for “The Project for Unexploded Ordnance Disposal in Central and Western Solomon Islands” under the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme

On 15th March, 2022, Grant Contract Signing Ceremony for the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) was held at the Embassy of Japan. Mr. Norimasa Yoshida, Charge d'Affaires ad interim signed a contract with Mr. Clifford Tunuki, Officer in Charge, The Explosive Ordnance Disposal, The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force.
 
The Government of Japan will provide grant assistance up to US$787,815, which will install equipment such as excavator, specialized vehicles to The Explosive Ordnance Disposal, The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force. The legacy of the fighting that took place between Japan and US during World War 2 still remains as a great risk for the people of Solomon Islands and the land is heavily contaminated with UXO even today. Japan is fully aware of the importance of UXO issues and has placed particular emphasis on UXO response in cooperation with United States and Australia. The funding will contribute to not only ensure the safety of the people of Solomon Islands, but also aid socio-economic development of rural areas of this country.
